Initial auditions will take place on the Playhouse Stage on Sunday, August 10 from 6:30-10:00 PM. Please note that at any time, these auditions could be video recorded for casting purposes only. Please prepare a monologue in the style of the character auditioning for; preferably from a play, around a minute long. The monologue can be either comedic or dramatic but it should be contemporary. It does not have to be memorized but should be prepared.
Callbacks will consist of cold reads from the script. Sides will be posted with the callback list.
Audition sign ups can be found: https://www.theaterforms.com/georgetownpalace/baskerville/auditionform/.
We are looking for performers for all roles. We are looking for 5 actors aged 18 and up. In addition to the named roles, we are looking to cast 2-3 standby performers (formerly labeled understudies).
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:
Special note: Though the characters in the piece are cis-gender, non-binary, trans, and gender non-conforming actors are encouraged to audition.
The age range listed with each character is the age the character should present on stage, not necessarily the age of the actor playing the role.
1 actor will play Sherlock Holmes and 1 actor will play John Watson, while the rest of the cast plays the remaining 40 characters.
SHERLOCK HOLMES – (Male 30s – 40s). Highly intelligent, confident, charismatic, quick-witted, obsessive. Thinks very highly of his close friend Watson. A sophisticated mind who savors adventure and an intriguing mystery and has a manic gleam of mischief in his eyes. A mind that works overtime. All ethnicities are strongly encouraged. Would like the use of an english accent.
DR. JOHN WATSON – (Male 30s – 50s). Smart, grounded, and full of heart and wonder, lives to have adventures and assist his close friend Holmes. We see the play through his eyes. The heart and soul of the play. All ethnicities are strongly encouraged. Would like the use of an english accent.
ACTOR 1 – (Male 20s – 50s) Must show great versatility and nimbleness physically and vocally (including multiple dialects). Plays multiple roles (over 10), including STAPLETON (seemingly geeky butterfly lover who conceals a psychopath within), BARRYMORE (mournful caretaker of Baskerville Hall), MILKER (scrappy Dickensian urchin boy), LUCY (loving wife of WILSON), and DR. MORTIMER
ACTOR 2 – (Male 20s – 50s). Must show great versatility and nimbleness physically and vocally (including multiple dialects). Plays multiple roles, including SIR HUGO BASKERVILLE (a brutal, cruel Cavalier), WILSON (exuberant, hearty head of messenger office), SIR HENRY BASKERVILLE (young Texan relation to Baskervilles, open-hearted, earnest, ready for adventure and to fall in love), and INSPECTOR LESTRADE (cocky police inspector). All ethnicities are strongly encouraged.
ACTRESS 1 – (Female 20s-50s). Must show great versatility and nimbleness physically and vocally (including multiple dialects). Plays multiple roles, including MISS STAPLETON (STAPLETON’s initially secretive, scared “sister” who passionately falls in love with SIR HENRY), CARTWRIGHT (scrappy Dickensian urchin boy), MRS. BARRYMORE (severe, humorless Swedish caretaker of Baskerville Hall), MRS. HUDSON (older, maternal housekeeper for HOLMES). All ethnicities are strongly encouraged.
Callbacks will take place on Tuesday, August 12 by invitation only from 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM on the Playhouse Stage.
Callbacks will be posted on the Georgetown Palace website as soon as possible after initial auditions are completed, and an email will be sent to all audition participants at the time of posting. Specific sides will be provided for callbacks for all characters.
A link to the website that holds the sides will be provided in the email.
