Context
Nell Gwynn has been King Charles II’s mistress for a couple of years and she has her own apartment at the Palace. She is still an actress at the theatre in Drury Lane and recently poked fun at Louise de Keroualle (another of Charles’ mistresses) while on stage. Her actions enraged Charles’ chief minister and, as a result, Nell’s sister was beaten up and left outside the theatre as a warning.
