DAVID Give me the phone.

MARK You can’t make a call.

DAVID (Takes phone) Let me try this.

(David walks to the window and dials the phone. Mark waits.)

MARK Is it going through?

(No response)

I think these building walls are too thick or something.

(David hangs up the phone and gives it to Mark.)

MARK I’ll go out and call him.

DAVID And what are you going to ask him?

MARK Whatever you want.

(Someone knocks at the door. It is not the three, two count. David and Mark stay still and quiet. The person knocks again. Silence.

Mark walks to the door. David waves for him to stop. Mark looks through the peephole.)

MARK They left.

DAVID If it isn’t the knock, then the person got no business being here.

MARK Eric should be here by now.

DAVID Did you hear me?

MARK I’m a get a bagel.

DAVID Forget it. Stay here. I don’t want anybody seeing you leave the apartment.

MARK I had my heart set on a coffee.

DAVID If they’re cops around and you keep coming in back and forth, they’ll figure something out.

MARK All right.

DAVID (Pause) Do people usually knock on your shift?

MARK No, but remember, I do the graveyard.

DAVID (Looks out the window through the curtains) How was your shift last night?

MARK It was all right. I tried one of those crossword puzzles in the paper. They’re hard.

DAVID Did anybody go to the car?

MARK No. (Grabs lighter and tries to get a flame again)

DAVID Did you fall asleep?

MARK No. (Struggles with lighter)

DAVID Sure?

MARK (Upset with lighter) Yes, I’m sure. No, I did not.

DAVID If you did-?

MARK Why are you asking me that?

DAVID Jay said he’s found you sleeping.

MARK He’s a goddamn liar. When?

DAVID I’m not here to gossip.

MARK You brought it up. You said his name.

DAVID He’s approached you about it, right? That’s why I said his name.

MARK I don’t know what you’re telling me.

(Mark’s phone rings.)

MARK Oh, shit. (Looks at phone) It’s Jay.

DAVID Let me talk to him.

MARK (Picks up phone) Jay?…hello?

DAVID Mark-

MARK Jay?…I can’t hear you…

DAVID (Takes the phone, into phone) Jay?…Yeah?…

MARK I can’t understand anything he’s saying.

DAVID (Into phone) What was that?

MARK Try texting him.

DAVID (Into phone) What?… “Stay”?…Jay, I didn’t hear what you said after that.

MARK Step outside.

DAVID (Looks at the phone, hangs up) He hung up.

MARK He said, “Stay”?

DAVID Then something else after that.

MARK Well, you heard him say, “Stay”, right? So, we stay.

DAVID I should have never taken this car.

MARK Hopefully Eric brings some barbeque chips.

DAVID …nothing’s free…

MARK You know what I was thinking? I was thinking that we should have like a party in here. Get some chips, cigars, women. Good idea, right?

DAVID I’m not thinking about any parties right now.

MARK You know, it’s hard to talk to you.

DAVID I don’t know how you could sit there and do nothing.

MARK I’m doing something: I’m waiting.
