Context
Pepe el Romano is one of the most desirable bachelors in the village. Despite their age difference (he is 25 and she is 39), he is engaged to Angustias, the eldest of Bernarda Alba’s daughters. But Angustias’ youngest sister Adela is in love with Pepe, and has been secretly meeting him late at night when she thinks everyone else is asleep. Martirio, only a few years older than Adela, has discovered her secret, and confronts Adela as Martirio reveals her own desire for Pepe.
