Jason and Creusa have just been married, and Creon has come to Medea’s house to force her to leave the city of Corinth. Creon views Medea as a barbaric savage, but also a potential threat, since she is known for evil plots and acts of sorcery. Their argument centres on the concept of justice, and the ways in which kings find themselves above the law. Medea finally relents, but convinces Creon to let her stay until the next morning, giving her time to execute her plot to destroy Creon’s family

Still she is plotting evil; well I know
Her guile, and well I know her cruel hand.
Whom does she spare, or whom let rest secure?

With the swift sword, but Jason's prayers availed
To spare her life. She may go forth unharmed
