Context
Theseus, the great hero of Greek myth, was thought to be dead. His wife Phaedra confessed her love to Hippolytus, Theseus’ son. But now that Theseus is home, she is consumed by shame and guilt. Her nurse Oenone created a lie to protect Phaedra: Hippolytus tried to rape Phaedra. The lie works as Hippolytus has already told Theseus that he will be leaving the kingdom, arousing the king’s suspicions. In this scene, Theseus confronts and banishes his son.
