Hermes, messenger of the gods, has been sent by his father, Zeus, to question Prometheus; the captive Titan has alluded that an ill-fated marriage will one day overthrow Zeus. Hermes and Prometheus launch into a lengthy exchange where they insult and mock each other: Prometheus tells Hermes that he is too young and insolent, and Hermes retorts that Prometheus is a dirty thief and a traitor.
