CORINA He said go to the Pemex station under Interstate 15 and get into the back of a blue Dodge Ram pick up truck and wait. I did what I was told.
EFREN That’s it?
CORINA That’s all I got.
EFREN So you just took his word?
CORINA I trust my husband.
EFREN When was the last time you talked to him?
CORINA The night before the morning I left. Two days ago. Is he going to pick me up?
EFREN How would I know?
CORINA You bought me here, so…
EFREN And that’s all I do. I get the money. Everything else is on you.
CORINA So you don’t know if my husband is coming to get me?
EFREN I don’t know how else to say it. No.
CORINA He’s probably on his way.
EFREN Wishful thinking. He doesn’t know where we are.
CORINA How far are we from New York?
EFREN Two days. If you drive.
CORINA What do I do? I don’t know what to do.
EFREN Let’s see if we get this money first and then we can think about that.
CORINA Maybe he’s running late. You know, if he has a long day at work then maybe he couldn’t get to the bank or-
EFREN He was told specifically five o’clock.
CORINA Today?
EFREN In an hour… (Checks watch, corrects himself) …almost fifty-five minutes from now.
CORINA I didn’t know that. If he’s late, I apologize. I can sleep here tonight. I’ve slept on plenty of floors. I can eat when you do. You don’t have to rearrange your schedule for me. Not at all. Hey, I’ll sit here for as long as it takes! After the plane ride to Hermosillo, the bus to Nogales, the desert and to find you, I mean I appreciate the blankets, I can tell you put the effort in but we were crammed in there pretty good for that hour coming over. What I’m saying is, I’m sure there’s nothing to be concerned about and I’m prepared and willing to cooperate with whatever it is that you need me to do.
EFREN Shut up.
