Text
FRANCESCA Feel free to talk and use words as you normally would but try to keep your responses to the point, not brief but to the point. Okay?
JUAN Yes.
FRANCESCA Also, for the sake of consistency, incorporate the question with your answer. (Sits with pad)
FRANCESCA What’s your name?
JUAN Juan Irizarri.
FRANCESCA “My name is…”
JUAN My name is Juan Irizarri.
FRANCESCA How old are you?
JUAN I am forty years young.
FRANCESCA Tell me more.
JUAN Like?
FRANCESCA Where were you born?
JUAN You know where I was born.
FRANCESCA (Pointing to the camera) They don’t.
JUAN I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I moved to New York City when I was fourteen.
FRANCESCA How was your childhood like?
JUAN It was…who remembers such things?
FRANCESCA Recall your mother.
JUAN She was a woman of virtue and she held it in two places: Her heart and her belt. I was her prince.
FRANCESCA And your father?
JUAN He stood by himself on many matters. We were all by his deathbed but still he died alone.
FRANCESCA You had a little sister.
JUAN I don’t want to talk about that.
FRANCESCA But you’ve told me before.
JUAN Yes, but now I’m telling them. (Points to the camera)
FRANCESCA Do you believe in magic, ghosts and miracles?
JUAN No.
FRANCESCA Do you believe in God?
JUAN No.
FRANCESCA Do you believe in love at first sight?
JUAN No.
FRANCESCA Do you believe in love?
JUAN Indubitably.
FRANCESCA Are you in love now, Juan?
JUAN Yes.
FRANCESCA Does she treat you well?
JUAN She does.
FRANCESCA Have you ever fell out of love with her?
JUAN Once.
FRANCESCA When?
JUAN (With a smile) When she made me make a film.
FRANCESCA You’re such a clown.
JUAN Aren’t you going to ask me what I do for a living?
FRANCESCA Don’t rush me. What do you do for a living?
JUAN I am the owner of Pancho Villa. It is a play with words. It is a building down on Grand Street where each floor is a villa.
FRANCESCA Keep showing off.
JUAN On the first floor is the Pancho Villa lobby. This is where guests can enjoy the restaurant or the lounge. On the second floor is our first villa named Don Quixote. It is Mexican-themed with murals of him and windmills. The third is called Zorro. There are hidden treasures for guests to find. On the fourth floor is my favorite, the Don Juan villa. The rooms are covered in flower arrangements, fresh fruit, silk sheets and love letters.
DOORBELL BUZZES.
JUAN I’ll get that.
FRANCESCA Stay put. I don’t want you to ruin the shot. (Beat) Do you trust me?
JUAN (Surprised, considers many answers) …Yes.
