Context
Bunty and Nicky met in Paris, while they were both enjoying the decadent, glamorous society of the city. She has recently been introduced to Nicky’s family--and his mother, Florence, in particular--as his new fiancee. However, now that they have returned to England, Bunty has realized that she and Nicky are wildly unsuited. She does not love him and knows that he does not really love her either.
