Context
Eliza Doolittle, a flower girl, has come to seek out Professor Higgins after a chance meeting with him in Covent Garden the previous evening. She wants to pay him to teach her to speak nicely, rather than with her thick cockney accent. Colonel Pickering bets Higgins that he can't pass her off as a duchess in time for the Ambassador's Garden Party. Higgins takes the bet and agrees to take in Eliza while he teaches her.
