NIKKI Hey Grace? Are you ok?

GRACE What? Oh. Yeah, I’m fine. (beat) I feel so unimportant. I know how to do the inventory, the ordering and even the taxes, but so what? I need to do something that makes a difference! Nikki, you just started here but it seems like you could work here forever.

NIKKI Sure, because I love Christmas. And I love Santa! Sometimes I think Santa is the only guy I’ll ever love.

GRACE Well, I don’t think I will ever be happy here.

(GRACE takes out her necklace and holds up the star.)

NIKKI Wow. I’ve never seen that part of your necklace before, it’s beautiful.

GRACE Oh. Yeah. I got it for Christmas from my parents when I was a little girl. I barely remember them, though I still think of them, they died when I was 7.

NIKKI I’m so sorry… I knew you lived with your aunt but…

GRACE Yeah...I know. (a beat) Aunt Char seems to think I’m crazy for wanting to discover new worlds and study the universe. But I just... I know it’s what I’m supposed to do.

NIKKI Just like how I know I’m supposed to meet Santa again!

GRACE Oh, you were - you were serious about that whole meeting Santa thing?

NIKKI Yeah, of course! Just cuz I’m 19 doesn’t mean I can’t believe in Santa. Why?

GRACE No reason.

NIKKI Exactly! (beat) Now tell me more about new worlds and studying the universe.

GRACE The universe is incredible! There are black holes, distant nebulas, maybe even alternate dimensions. My parents used to tell me about a guiding star over the north pole called Polaris that’s always shining in the same place. There’re wonders like that all across the galaxy. That’s why I have to leave.
