Context
George has recently taken over the Terrebonne plantation because his uncle, Master Peyton, has died. Zoe is Master Peyton’s daughter from his relationship with a slave, and because she is only 1/8th black (known as an octoroon), she is taken in as one of the family. Since Master Peyton’s death, Terrebonne has fallen under hard times and is about to be sold. Zoe: (glancing at George) Poor fellow, he is poised to lose everything.
George: Zoe, with our ruin, you might be left without a home.
Zoe: O, no; think of yourself.
