Context
Michael is an Irish immigrant living in England with his English wife, Betty. At Michael’s invitation, three of his younger brothers, Hugo, Iggy, and Harry, have come to live with them. Betty resents the brothers’ brutish behavior and the fact that Michael makes excuses for them. Harry is especially demeaning towards her, referring to her as “English Polly”. Even as Betty laments that having his brothers there means they can’t have a real life together as husband and wife, Michael insists that
