Context
Darry and Sodapop are brothers and members of the Greasers, a working-class gang. The Greasers have a bitter rivalry with the upper-middle-class Socials gang. The night before this scene, Greaser Johnny stabbed and killed Bob, a Social who was attacking Johnny’s friend Ponyboy, Darry and Sodapop’s brother. Johnny and Ponyboy fled, and Darry and Sodapop don’t know anything about their whereabouts. They’re joined by Sandy, Sodapop’s girlfriend.
