Context
Jem has come to seek Mary out at Jamaica Inn. Rather than bump into his brother, Joss, he appears at her window and climbs in. She has been locked in her room after witnessing the extent of her uncle’s smuggling and shipwrecking activities on Christmas Eve. Jem is shocked at her injuries and realizes that he left her vulnerable when he abandoned her that night. Jem and Mary are attracted to each other but both of them have their guard up. MARY goes to the window and leans out
MARY: Who’s there?
JEM: (Whispers up to her) It’s me.

JEM: Come down to the door here and unbolt it for me.
