Context
Lawyer Atticus Finch was defending Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a young white woman. A jury found Tom guilty. The woman’s father, Bob Ewell, has been threatening Atticus in the wake of the trial. His children, Scout and Jem, were attacked while coming home from a high school pageant. Jem was hurt but was rescued by Arthur Radley, the Finch’s mysterious, reclusive neighbor. With Jem recovering inside, Sheriff Heck Tate arrived to tell Atticus that Bob was found dead with a knife
