Context
Antigone and her older sister Ismene are nieces of Creon. In the wake of a bitter war between Antigone’s brothers that left both of them dead, Creon is now king, and his determination that law and order are above all else is causing chaos and fear in the city. Creon declares that one brother, Eteocles, will be buried while the other, Polyneices, is a traitor and not worthy of a burial. Antigone is full of sorrow and is determined to bury Polyneices.
