Pyrgopolynices, an arrogant soldier, has kidnapped Philocomasium, a young woman and lover of Pleusicles. Palaestrio, a former slave to Pleusicles who was also kidnapped and now works for Pyrgopolynices, has devised a scheme to free Philocomasium: he will trick Pyrgopolynices into thinking that Philocomasium has a twin sister and mother who have just arrived on a ship to take Philocomasium back to Athens.
