Sawyer has returned home after serving for several years in the US army. His father has died, his brother is crippled in a wheelchair, and his mother is suffering from progressive memory loss. Sawyer himself has lost both hands and now has a hook and a plastic hand. He is disgusted to find a Confederate flag hanging outside the family home, along with his US flag hung upside down.
