Context
James is a teacher at the State School for the Deaf. He has invited one of his students, Sarah, out to dinner at an Italian restaurant in an effort to get her to talk to him. Sarah, however, has been fully deaf since birth, and does not speak at all. Throughout the scene, James talks and signs. Sarah speaks only with sign language, and James’ lines in response echo her lines.
