Context
Matt’s relationship with his mother, Bette, has always been haunted by Bette’s dream of a family that never was. She wanted a happy, perfect home full of many children; instead, Matt’s father had a drinking problem and her four other children were stillborn. Bette has never been able to come to terms with her grief, and Matt has always had to take care of her.

START: Bette: Skippy, are you there? Skippy?
(Enter Matt)
Matt: Yes.
Bette: Would you move this for me? (Indicates dead baby on the floor. He gingerly places it offstage.) Your father’s gone away. All the babies are dead. You’re the only thing of value left in my life, Skippy.

Bette: (Suddenly tearful) I don’t want to call you Matt.
