Context
Akim is Nikíta’s simple peasant father. While he isn’t very intelligent, he is morally upright, and is devastated at Nikíta’s drunkenness and cruelty towards his family, especially Nikíta’s wife Anisya. More than that, others observe that Nikíta is having an affair with young Akoulina (Anisya’s step-daughter from her previous marriage). No longer able to keep quiet, Akim confronts his son Nikíta about bringing his house to ruin through drink and dishonorable behavior.
