Context
Henry VIII of England wants to divorce his wife, Queen Katharine of Aragon. Cardinal Wolsey is his chief advisor and the official appointed in charge of this delicate matter. Thomas Cromwell works for Wolsey as his right-hand man. In this first expositional scene of Wolf Hall, we learn of the particular challenges surrounding Henry’s divorce, as well as the general state of England at this point in history.

Start: Wolsey: The King called me early this morning. Exceptionally early. Thomas: What did he want? Wolsey: A son.
End: Thomas: If I were you, I’d deal with the King’s case here in London. You have the Pope’s authority-- get him his divorce before Europe wakes up to what’s happening. Wolsey: When Europe wakes up it may break this country apart.
