Context
Piers Gaveston is a favorite of the king and most likely his lover. Because of their close relationship, Gaveston has had an overwhelming influence on King Edward, who has largely ignored his wife Queen Isabella. The barons of England have decided that Gaveston must be exiled again to prevent any more damaging influence on the king. In this scene, the two men exchange farewells and lovers’ promises. When Isabella enters, they turn on her and blame her for Gaveston’s exile. She defends her love
