Context
Hester Swane is a jilted woman, much like the Medea of myth. Her former lover Carthage has just married a much younger woman, and in revenge she has set fire to the bog, burning houses, barns, and everything she can. As she relishes in her anger, the ghost of her brother Joseph appears to her.
