MS. CARLSON OK. Can I see a show of hands? How many of you decided your senior drama project should be Hello, Dolly?
[No hands go up.]
MS. CARLSON (CONT'D) All right. Then I guess we have a unanimous decision. We'll do Our Town. Correct?
[Still no hands go up.]
MS. CARLSON Well, am I right? (Kim puts up her hand.)
MS. CARLSON (points to her) Yes, Kim?
KIM Well, we've been talking.
MS. CARLSON Yes?
KIM And, well, we decided we want to put on our own show.
MS. CARLSON Well, of course, you want to put on your own show. That's why I gave you a choice.
KIM I mean, we want to create our own original show.
MS. CARLSON OK. Mind telling me what kind of show?
KIM You've heard of the Sunrise Movement?
MS. CARLSON Of course.
KIM Well, we want the show to be our contribution to it.
MS. CARLSON That's very commendable, Kim. May I ask who's going to write the show?
KIM We want to give it a try.
MS. CARLSON But you're not professional playwrights.
KIM We know that. All we can say is, it will be as good as we can make it.
MS. CARLSON And how good do you suppose that will be?
ERIC We talked about it and decided we can't know until we try.
MS. CARLSON Let me ask a question. How many students in the class would like to do make the attempt?
(All the hands go up.)
MS. CARLSON Well, that settles that. (to Kim) Do you have a title yet?
KIM Yes, it's called Hooked on Happiness.
MS. CARLSON Well, if you don't mind my saying so, that doesn't sound as serious as your subject matter.
ERIC It has a lot of hidden meaning.
MS. CARLSON Oh. I'll tell you what? I'll give you two weeks to get started on it. Then I'll decide it's looking like something that could be stageworthy.
ERIC Two weeks? How much can we do by then?
MS. CARLSON The performance is in November. This is the beginning of August. If what you have looks at all promising, you can have the rest of August and all of September to finish it. Then, of course, we have to begin rehearsals. Fair enough?
