Context
Amanda Wingfield, a faded southern belle, desires nothing more than for her daughter, Laura, to get married. Despite her own failed marriage, she has high hopes for her daughter. However, she is blind to her daughter's fragile mental health and crippling shyness. Laura's brother, Tom, points this out to his mother but she brushes it aside. To appease his mother, Tom invites a friend to dinner, throwing Amanda into frenzied panic and excitement.
