Talthybius, a Greek guard, arrives in the camp to speak with Hecuba. He attempts to inform Hecuba that her daughter, Polyxena, is dead, but he is vague and indirect with his language and Hecuba does not understand what he is trying to say. However, she does understand the second part of his message.
