Context
Edmund is consumed with jealousy towards his brother, Edgar. Edmund is illegitimate and he knows that he will never therefore be superior to his brother. Hew resolves to deceive both his brother and father by playing them off against each other. He forges a letter supposedly from Edgar, which outlines a false plan to turn against their father, Gloucester. Gloucester is outraged by this trickery and the family is turned on itself.
