Context
Turner, 12 years old, and Pony, 9, are on a road and camping trip with their parents, heading towards Taos, New Mexico, to visit a dying great-aunt. One night in the Smoky Mountains, they wake up to find themselves alone in the tent, and must deal with strange night terrors while wondering where their parents have gone. Pony is loud, fearful, and defiant, expressing her terror of bears, snakes, and death. Turner tries to placate his sister, and the two turn on their flashlights while Turner

Start: Pony: (wakes like a shot) What was that? Silence. Then all the sounds combine into a terrifying cacophony.
Pony: Mommy? Mommy….?! It’s bears!
End: Turner: Come on, let’s get closer.
Pony: Ohhh, they’re so bright!
Turner: Hold on tight now. I don’t want to lose you.
