Context
Gabriel and Gabrielle are two strangers who meet by chance and quickly develop a deep connection. Gabriel, a tourist from London, stumbled upon Gabrielle’s tiny inn on the Coorong as he travels Australia searching to connect with the memory of his absent father. That evening, the young couple sleeps together on the beach. Here, Gabriel and Gabrielle try to navigate their new intimacy, trying to share their stories while being irrevocably burdened by their past.

START: Gabriel: You smoke.

END: Gabrielle: We just f&*#@!. (Beat.) That’s all.
Gabriel: Right.
Gabrielle: Your father’s right about the Coorong… You can be standing on solid ground then without even noticing, it turns to water beneath you. And if you don’t move, you’ll drown.

Gabriel: Here.
He gives her the piece of driftwood.
Keep this to remember your first time.
