Synopsis

Situated in a tough Chicago neighborhood and populated by students everyone else has given up on, Tumbldn High School is not anyone’s idea of a model public school. The dedicated teachers, already burned out, are pushed to the breaking point when they learn that Tumbldn will shut down at the end of the school year. Some want to fight, some see it as pointless. The one thing they all have in common is that they resent Ricky, their spineless Vice Principal. But when a student’s well-intentioned act of mischief inspires him, Ricky suddenly steps up and leads the charge to save the school. The teachers have to decide: risk their careers and follow, or throw in the towel and accept the inevitable? With a diverse ensemble cast, Exit Strategy is both a sitcom-esque character study and a visceral indictment of the challenges faced in America’s public schools. It is part of Ike Holter’s Rightlynd Saga, a series of seven plays that deal with contemporary issues in Chicago.
