Plot

ACT ONE

A massive crowd gathers in front of Hollywood’s Chinese Theatre, hoping to catch a glimpse of the actors arriving for a star-studded premiere of the latest Lockwood & Lamont picture, “The Royal Rascal”. The dashing Don Lockwood and the lovely Lina Lamont - the stars of the picture - have been romantically linked in the press and are being questioned by gossip columnist Doris Bailey about their relationship. In the interview, Doris persuades Don to tell the story of his rise to fame. As Don regales Doris with a tale of training in exclusive academies and incredible performances in symphony halls, a flashback reveals Don’s less-than-glamorous truth. In reality, Don got his start tap dancing on the streets with his friend Cosmo Brown, eventually making their way into seedy vaudeville halls and ending up playing “mood music” for silent films (“Fit as a Fiddle”). Through pure luck, Don got his break when producer R.F. Simpson took notice of his work as a stuntman. Simpson gave
