Plot

Prologue

The musical opens at a post office. Sophie, a young woman of 20, enters the stage alone bearing three letters. She reads the names of the addressees: “Sam Carmichael, Bill Austin, and Harry Bright.” She kisses each of the letters before posting them in the mail (“I Have a Dream”).

Act One

Sophie sits on the beach by herself. It is a beautiful summer day, the day before her wedding. Her two best friends, Ali and Lisa, enter, newly arrived to Kalokairi just in time for Sophie’s big day. Sophie is overjoyed to see her friends, not in the least because she’s bursting to share a big secret with them: she’s invited her dad to the wedding!

Ali and Lisa are, understandably, confused. After all, Sophie’s mother, Donna, has always claimed that she can’t remember who Sophie’s father was. Unbeknownst to Donna, Sophie — determined to have her father walk her down the aisle — has found Donna’s old diary. It is from the summer when Donna would have fallen pregnant with Sophie, 20 years
