The Marvelous Wonderettes

The voice of Principal Varney introduces the entertainment for the 1958 Springfield High School Prom. Four best friends, Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy, and Suzy, appear on stage, ready to bring the house down. Each girl has a signature colour: Missy in tangerine, Suzy in blue, Cindy Lou in pink, and Betty Jean in green. Together, they make the Marvelous Wonderettes! (“Mr. Sandman”). During their first song, we learn that Suzy is dating the lightboard operator, Ritchie Stevens, who flashes the lights to show his love. After the Wonderettes introduce themselves. they begin their “Sugar and Spice Medley” (“Lollipop/Sugartime”). The Wonderettes, pleased with their performance thus far, break into their cheer that won them third place at the State Song Leader’s Competition. They thank the teacher that helped them earn their big win, Mr. Lee. Betty Jean heads to put the Wonderettes’ trophy in the school’s trophy case.
