Summer has come to an end and the Cuyahoga High Marching Beavers are arriving at band camp to brush up on their skills before the start of a highly anticipated football season. Elliott, the newly appointed captain of the Beavers, is a tuba-playing band geek with something to prove (“Captain of the Beavers”). As he nervously calls roll, it becomes apparent that the Marching Beavers have a lackluster band with only nine members (“Band Geeks”). Among the misfits are Laura, Elliott’s best friend and flute player; Nicole, the baton twirler girl; Stewart, the asthmatic clarinetist and overachieving principal’s son; Spitz, the trumpeter with an unwarranted ego; and Natalia, a classically trained trumpeter on exchange from Braslovia.
The Beavers begin their rehearsal on the football field under the direction of beloved band teacher Mr. Hornsby. As they begin to play, Cuyahoga High principal Ms. Dixon approaches with a new student. She informs the band that the Marching Beavers will be
