Taking place in Bavaria, the show concerns Sieglinde, the daughter of a music teacher, and her lover Karl, the local schoolmaster. Karl and Sieglinde travel to Munich in order to try to get a song written by Walther and Karl, published. In Munich Karl becomes enamored of opera star Frieda Hatzfeld while Sieglinde becomes enamored of operetta librettist, Bruno Mahler. Frieda soon leaves for Berlin to star in a new film. Thus, Bruno has Sieglinde take on the leading role in his opera. However, it is soon clear that the theatre is no place for amateurs. Sieglinde and Karl return home while Frieda comes back to Munich and retakes her places as the star of the opera.
