Plot

Ren McCormack, a “big city” teenager, decides to dance away the long work day at a Chicago nightclub (“Footloose”). Ren breaks the news to his friends, since his father left them, Ren and his mother, Ethel, can no longer afford to live in Chicago and now must move in with his aunt and uncle in the small and conservative town of Bomont.

The McCormacks are settling into sleepy life in Bomont and attend service at the local church. The pastor, Shaw Moore, gives a long-winded and passionate sermon on the modern evil that is rock and roll music (“On Any Sunday”). The pastor’s daughter, Ariel, sneaks away after service to meet up with her rough-and-tumble boyfriend, Ariel’s father catches her with Chuck and is livid.

The next morning starts a new beginning at a new school for Ren. He quickly makes a friend in the kind-hearted and dim-witted cowboy, Willard Hewitt. Ren excitedly tells Willard about his home back in Chicago, and how amazing the dancing was in the city (“I Can’t Stand
