Plot

Act One

It is 6AM and workers arrive at the Brooklyn Navy Yard (“I Feel Like I’m Not Out of Bed Yet”). Three sailors--Gabey, Ozzie, and Chip--emerge, excited to begin their 24-hour shore leave in Manhattan (“New York, New York”). Each man has a different agenda for their day’s leave. Chip wants to explore the sights his father has told him about and eagerly clutches his battered guide book. Ozzie has his sights set on Manhattan’s women, while Gabey wants to find a special lady who will remind him of his high school sweetheart. The trio head to the subway, where Gabey spots a picture of Ivy Smith, “Miss Turnstiles” for June. Despite a little old lady’s accusations of vandalism, he takes the picture and declares his intention to find Miss Smith. Chip protests that the city is too big to find one woman, but Ozzie convinces him to help Gabey. The men decide to split up and track Ivy down around the city, using the details written about her in the picture. As they leave, they imagine what
