If/Then has two simultaneous storylines for Elizabeth Vaughn; in one she is called “Beth,” and in the other, “Liz.” As the narrative shifts between possible choices and outcomes for these two versions of Elizabeth, characters and the world around her change. In this synopsis, the storyline for Beth is designated with regular text, and the storyline for Liz is designated with italics.
Act One
In a dark space, Beth appears, musing what might have been. She talks out loud to herself, but also to someone else. She is “lost in what might be,” and then the world shifts.
In Madison Square Park , New Yorkers bustle through their day (“What If”). Kate and Lucas sit on the same bench. Never hesitating to break the ice, Kate tells Lucas (a complete stranger) that she is waiting for her new neighbor, a woman who is recently divorced and ready to meet the love of her life..
