After returning from the military, Turiddu discovers that his fiancée, Lola, has not waited for him, and instead married Alfio. Attempting to make Lola jealous, Turiddu seduces Santuzza, a young village girl. Lola is so jealous of Santuzza, that she starts an affair with Turiddu, betraying her husband. Turiddu sings about his former fiancée, before the town starts to stir (O Lola bianca). Santuzza comes looking for Turiddu at his mother’s Tavern. She finds his mother, Lucia there, and can not help but tell her the story of her seduction, and how she has been thrown aside by Turiddu (Dite, mamma Lucia).
Before she can go on, Alfio enters the square with his friends, and brags about his beautiful new wife (Il cavallo scalpita). A procession of villages going to church crowds the square, and after they have all entered church for Mass, Santuzza is left alone with Lucia. Santuzza tells her that Turiddu has begun an affair with Lola (Voi lo sapete, o mamma). Lucia feels terrible for
