It seems incredible now that one of Handel’s most well-loved, and more frequently performed operas, Serse, was not staged for nearly 200 years after its first performance. Between 1738 and 1924 it fell completely out of the operatic canon. It was revived by a performance in Gottingen directed by Oscar Hagen, and has happily since enjoyed the success of Handel’s other works, second only to Giulio Cesare in popularity.
Serse does stand out amongst Handel’s operas, as one of the very few --if only-- comedy that he ever produced. It is still technically an opera seria, due to its noble subject
