Plot

The Vagina Monologues begins with an introduction by a narrator, but the text can be split up among many women. The narrator begins to describe why she is worried about her vagina. Nobody talks about it and women often make excuses as to why they have no relationship to their vaginas. The narrator (the voice of Eve Ensler, the playwright) tells the audience that she has done over 200 interviews with all types of women and as soon as they begin, they realize they actually love talking about their vaginas. The narrator thinks the word “vagina” is a big part of the problem because it sounds like an infection, and she lists all the other words that women all over the country call their vagina: pussycat, poochi, coochi snorcher, Gladys Siegelman, schmende, and many more. She reiterates that she’s worried about vaginas.
