Aaron Levy wrote Pizza With Shrimp on Top as a way to engage his English students in theatre and present teenagers with issues that are relevant to them. He began with staged readings, and then developed the play into full-fledged production, first premiered at Arizona State University in 1992 (for which it won an award for Best Original Play).
Since then, the play has had numerous productions and staged readings at high schools, colleges, and community groups. In 1999, Levy won a special grant in education from the Nevada Council of the Arts. In 2006, Pizza With Shrimp on Top won the
