The Heidi Chronicles

Play

Writers: Wendy Wasserstein

Plot

Act One

The year is 1989, and Heidi Holland, a renowned art historian specializing in women’s art, is teaching a class at Columbia University. Suddenly, we flashback to 1965, where we see Heidi 24 years earlier at a high school dance with her best friend, Susan. Heidi is shy and demure, while Susan is loud and enthusiastic, pushing her friend to talk to the boys at the party. Eventually, a guy by the name of Chris Boxer approaches Heidi, but she decides she is not interested and deflects his attention by hiding next to Susan, instead. When Susan runs off to go after a boy she’s been eyeing, Heidi is left vulnerable to male advances. Peter Patrone swoops in and approaches her, and he and Heidi hit it off, and eventually start to dance.

The scene then fast forwards three years to another dance -- this time, at a fundraiser to elect Eugene McCarthy for President. Heidi is at the potato chip bowl, snacking away, when she is, once again, approached by a man. This one’s name is Scoop
