When Ivan Vassilevitch Lomov comes to his longtime neighbor, Stepan Stepanovich Chubukov, to propose marriage to Stepan’s daughter Natalya, he is a nervous wreck. Dressed in his finest clothes, Ivan is hopeful that Natalya will say yes and they can live happily ever after! However, soon after Ivan begins his proposal to Natalya, they get into a heated argument about who owns Oxen Meadows, a property nestled between their two houses. Both lose their tempers and the marriage proposal begins to unravel. Chekhov’s hilarious farce is an excellent choice for a small cast of three. As a one-act play, A Marriage Proposal is also ideal for a one-act festival or as part of a showcase!
