Plot

Act One

Miss Gibson, the headmistress of Grangewood School for Girls, introduces the play to the audience. It will be portrayed by members of the fourth form with a little help from the teachers. Daisy Meredith then steps forward and introduces herself. She is the new scholarship girl at Grangewood and comes from a less privileged background than the other students. Her introduction is interrupted by Sybil Burlington, a cruel and conceited student who vows to get rid of lowly scholarship student. The scene then shifts to Daisy’s home, where she excitedly packs to go to boarding school. Her mother is proud of Daisy and reminds her to behave honestly and admirably while at school.

On the train to Grangewood, Daisy is befriended by the Head Girl, Clare Beaumont, who is kind to her. She then meets Trixie, a friendly, madcap student, who takes an instant shine to Daisy. Trixie tells Daisy that Clare’s family own Grangewood but they have fallen on hard times. There is talk of long-lost
