Act One

The play opens at the MacGregor Plantation in Virginia. The first of three couples is introduced. Kaneisha, a slave, is working in the overseer’s cottage. Rihanna’s “Work” is played and she begins twerking to the song. Jim, the white overseer, enters carrying a whip and watches her dance. He comments that she has not cleaned the cottage well enough and wonders whether she would eat off the floor. To prove his point, he throws a cantaloupe on the ground (after initially getting confused and calling it a watermelon) and forces Kaneisha to eat it. As she eats, she begins to dance again and Jim becomes increasingly aroused. He initiates sex with Kaneisha who demands to be called a “nasty, lazy negress”.

The next couple to be introduced are Madame MacGregor (Alana) and Phillip, her servant. She is uncomfortable in the heat and constantly unbuttons and then rebuttons her bodice. She asks Phillip to
