Context

Plaza Suite had a short out of town run at the Colonial Theatre in Boston, before premiering on Broadway at the Plymouth Theatre in February 1968. Directed by Mike Nichols, the play ran for 1,097 performances before closing in October 1970. Nichols won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play and Neil Simon was nominated for Best Play, but lost out to Tom Stoppard (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead). A national tour ran at the same time as the Broadway production, from October 1968 to February 1970.
